Sen. Don Huffines’ Statement on Cities’ Illegal Red Light Cameras
North Texas cities are illegal operating red light cameras to profit off of drivers

[DALLAS, TX] – With reports out of Austin and Dallas confirming that many cities are operating red light cameras in violation of state law, Senator Don Huffines issued the following statement:

“I’m sick and tired of local politicians and bureaucrats who think they’re above the law. If a Texan breaks the law, he or she gets fined or thrown in jail. When local politicians and bureaucrats operate red light cameras in violation of state law, they get to profit off of Texans’ hard-earned money with no consequences?! That’s just wrong, and as a state Senator and a watchdog for taxpayers, it’s my obligation to fix it.

“In 2019, I will work hard to ban red light cameras. They’re unsafe, unjust, and unpopular. Red light cameras are a rip-off, and I’m going to keep up my fight to rip them out of the ground. With Governor Greg Abbott’s support, I’m confident 2019 is the year we’ll finally save drivers from being harassed and taxed by these money-grabbing red light cameras.”

According to information from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts – published by CBSDFW – cities that are entirely or partially within Senate District 16 collected more than $15.5 million from drivers using red light cameras in 2017, issuing more than 200,000 tickets.
