DALLAS, TX, July 2, 2021 — Leading into the patriotic weekend of Fourth of July, Republican candidate for governor of Texas Don Huffines released the following statement regarding Governor Greg Abbott’s failure to safeguard our state’s monuments from attack and removal by the radical Left:

“Over the past year, America has witnessed destruction of our heritage and anarchy in our streets. In a gross attempt to erase our nation’s history, woke leftists across America have sought to bring down our historical monuments. Their actions are outright disrespectful to our nation and our heritage. In 2018, Texas removed more monuments than any other state. This was on Abbott’s watch.”

During the George Floyd riots last year, which resulted in the burning down of small businesses and public property in cities around the nation, the following monuments were removed in Texas by Democrat mayors and Leftist City Councils: a Confederate monument in Fort Worth; the Spirit of the Confederacy and the statue of Richard W. Dowling in Houston; the Confederate War Memorial in Dallas; the Jefferson Davis Memorial Boulder in Brownsville; the Our Confederate Soldiers monument in Beaumont; the Leonard Park Confederate monument in Gainesville; and the Caldwell County Confederate monument in Lockhart. Additionally, Christopher Columbus statues were pulled down in Houston and San Antonio.

The above are only the monuments that were removed during the Floyd riots. Dozens of others have also been torn down during Abbott’s tenure.

“Let me be clear: Texas has a proud and unique history that we cannot allow our enemies to erase. We know that the Socialist agitators making war on our history and tearing down our monuments will not be satisfied until statues of Founding Fathers like Thomas Jefferson and even George Washington are removed from our public square; we have already seen that happen in other states. We cannot and will not let the radicals win. As governor, I will protect Texas’ rich history and heritage from anarchists who would see it reimagined.”
